There are six most common theorists of motivation. Their theories focus on the assumption that individuals are motivated by the desire to fulfill their inner needs. These theories are useful because they provide us with a starting point and a framework for analysing and discussing the main motivational issues.

The six theories:

  1. Taylor (1856-1917)
  2. Mayo (1880-1949)
  3. Maslow (1908-1970)
  4. Herzberg (1923-2000)
  5. McClelland (1917-1998)
  6. Vroom (1932- )
